Her story

Historical context

goddess · Igboland, southeastern Nigeria; living tradition

Ala is the Igbo earth goddess and the highest moral authority — the ground, the womb and the law at once. Offences against her are nsọ ala, earth taboos, and she holds the ancestors inside her body. Whole mbari houses of painted clay sculpture were built as offerings and then deliberately left to dissolve back into her.

Mythology & traditions

Her justice is not negotiable and not cruel: it is structural. Land disputes, murder, broken kinship duties all become her business, because harming people is harming the ground they stand on. And the mbari tradition is her signature — enormous labour made beautiful and then given away to rain, on purpose.
