Her story

Historical context

goddess · Greece and Cyprus, c. 8th century BCE onward

Aphrodite rose from sea foam off Cyprus, older and stranger than her prettier reputation — at Sparta she was armed, and Homer calls desire a force that overturns kings. Sappho prayed to her as an ally, not a decoration.

Mythology & traditions

Her power is that nobody consents to it. Gods, mortals and beasts alike are moved, and the myths track what that does: ships launched, marriages broken, unlikely joys. She is not tender so much as irresistible, and she rewards those who admit what they want.
