Cretan and Aegean
Mistress of the Labyrinth Thread
Crete and the Aegean — Bronze Age name evidence and later Greek myth
Her story
goddess · Crete and the Aegean — Bronze Age name evidence and later Greek myth
Ariadne is best known as the Cretan princess who gives Theseus the thread through the labyrinth. Earlier evidence and later cult suggest she may preserve features of an older Aegean goddess.
Abandoned on Naxos, she becomes the immortal partner of Dionysus in one tradition. Her arc moves from helper, to loss, to a sovereignty not dependent on the hero she saved.
