Her story

Historical context

goddess · Greece, Archaic period through Roman era

Artemis asked Zeus for her bow, her hounds and her freedom, and never surrendered any of them. Greek girls dedicated their toys to her before marriage; women in labour called on her, because she guarded the threshold where life is risked.

Mythology & traditions

Actaeon saw her bathing and was turned to a stag torn apart by his own dogs — the story is less about modesty than about consent: what belongs to her is not available to be taken. Her arrows are swift and her mercy is exact.
