Her story

Historical context

goddess · Zoroastrian Iran; hymned in the Avesta, honoured in Zoroastrian communities today

Ashi is the personification of the reward that follows right action — the daughter of Ahura Mazda and Spenta Armaiti, sister of Justice. Her hymn lists the houses she blesses: they are prosperous, fragrant, well-run, and their prosperity is described as earned.

Mythology & traditions

The striking part of her hymn is who she refuses. She will not enter the house of the childless, the very old or the very young — not from cruelty, but because her gifts require a life with capacity to receive them. Ashi is fortune that lands only where there is somewhere for it to land, which is why her worship is inseparable from good thoughts, good words and good deeds.
