Ataegina

Goddess of Spring's Return

Lusitania and western Iberia, pre-Roman into the Roman period

Her story

Historical context

goddess · Lusitania and western Iberia, pre-Roman into the Roman period

Ataegina is known almost entirely from votive inscriptions cut into stone across western Iberia — people asking for healing, for justice, occasionally for revenge. The Romans matched her with Proserpina, which tells us what they understood her to be: a goddess who moves between the season of death and the season of return.

Mythology & traditions

What survives of her is a pile of requests. That is her character: she is the goddess people turned to when something had been taken and they wanted it back — health, property, a fair outcome. Her spring is not gentle sentiment; it is restitution, the underworld made to give something up.
