Her story

Historical context

goddess · Oromo tradition, Horn of Africa; living practice

Atete is the Oromo goddess of fertility, honoured in the Ateetee rite where women gather with milk, butter and green grass to bless and to demand redress. It is also a judicial institution: when a man wrongs a woman, the women process to him singing until the matter is settled.

Mythology & traditions

Her power runs on collective voice. The Ateetee song is not a plea — it is a sanction, sung by many women at once, and the community regards it as binding. She is fertility and justice in the same hand, because in her tradition life-giving carries authority.
