Her story

Historical context

goddess · Japan, from c. 8th century CE; adapted from Indian Sarasvati

Benzaiten arrived in Japan as Sarasvati travelling with Buddhism and became the only woman among the Seven Lucky Gods. Her shrines sit on islands and beside ponds — she is always found where there is water.

Mythology & traditions

She is said to be jealous of couples who visit her shrines together, a folk detail that says a lot: she wants the artist's full attention. Merchants pray to her for fortune, musicians for skill, speakers for fluency. Her promise is that talent and prosperity are the same current if you keep it moving.
