Her story

Historical context

goddess · Sundarbans devotion, recorded 19th century

Bonbibi is revered by both Muslim and Hindu communities of the Sundarbans as guardian of the forest, protecting honey collectors and woodcutters from the tiger-demon Dakshin Rai.

Mythology & traditions

In the Bonbibi Johuranama, Bonbibi and her brother Shah Jangali come to the tidal forest to establish justice against Dakshin Rai’s appetite. She rescues the poor boy Dukhe after a greedy trader abandons him. The story gives the Sundarbans a moral economy: livelihood is permitted, but exploitation and excess violate the forest’s balance.
