Ceuci

Her story

Historical context

goddess · Tupi oral tradition

Ceuci is a Tupi figure associated with cultivated plants and with the Pleiades, whose rising marked the planting season. In some accounts she is the mother of the culture hero Jurupari.

Mythology & traditions

The Pleiades have long helped agricultural communities mark seasonal change, and later retellings connect Ceuci with their appearance and the opening of fields. Accounts also name her as mother of Jurupari, whose story became famous through colonial and nineteenth-century collections. Because Tupi peoples hold diverse traditions, details should not be treated as one uniform Amazonian canon.
