Her story

Historical context

goddess · Svaneti and the Georgian Caucasus — pre-Christian highland tradition surviving in ballads and hunting custom

Dali lives on the inaccessible crags of the Georgian Caucasus, guarding the wild herds. She grants a hunter extraordinary luck if he pleases her — and destroys him if he boasts of her, takes more than his share, or breaks his word.

Mythology & traditions

Svan ballads tell of hunters who climbed to her ledge and returned with impossible fortune, then fell from the same cliff after speaking of her in the village. Her golden hair is the thread in these songs: to be favoured by Dali is to be bound by a contract, and the terms are restraint and silence.
