Her story

Historical context

goddess · Ireland and wider Celtic Europe; attested through medieval Irish manuscripts

Danu barely appears in the texts, yet an entire divine race is named for her — the people of Danu. She is inference rather than portrait: a mother known only by her children, her name surviving in the great rivers of Europe.

Mythology & traditions

The scholars' argument about whether she was ever worshipped is itself the teaching. Some sources run so deep they are only visible in what grew out of them. When the Tuatha Dé were defeated they went under the hills, not away, and the flow continued below the surface.
