Her story

Historical context

goddess · Java and Bali; pre-Hindu roots, observed continuously through to the present

Dewi Sri is the rice itself. In the Javanese telling she dies young and refuses ordinary burial; from her buried body the first rice plant, coconut and useful crops grow. Farmers still treat the first cut of the harvest as her person, wrapped and carried home like a bride.

Mythology & traditions

Her rites are the opposite of grand: don't waste rice, don't step over the harvest, keep the granary respectful. She rules the everyday miracle of there being enough dinner, and Balinese and Javanese households still make her small figures at planting. Her death-into-food story insists that endings feed things.

What you need to grow

Nurture the ordinary supply lines: groceries, savings, sleep, the boring foundation.

What you need to know

Enough is a real quantity. You have been treating abundance as a feeling instead of a number.
