Her story

Historical context

goddess · India, c. 6th century CE onward; living tradition

When no god could defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura, the gods pooled their power and Durga emerged, armed by all of them, and killed him after a nine-day fight. Durga Puja still runs those nine nights across Bengal.

Mythology & traditions

She is composed while she fights — the sculptures show her face calm, foot on the demon, no strain. Her ten arms carry every god's weapon: she is what happens when many powers agree to act through one focused person. On the tenth day her image is carried to the river and dissolved.
