Ganga

The River Descended from Heaven

Her story

Historical context

goddess · India, Vedic period onward; living tradition

Ganga came down from heaven at the prayers of a king who needed her to release his ancestors' ashes — and she would have destroyed the earth with the impact, so Shiva caught her in his hair and let her out gently. She has run through northern India ever since.

Mythology & traditions

Millions bathe in her to release wrongdoing and carry the dead to her banks. She is famously indiscriminate: she does not check whether you deserve the water. What she models is not innocence but the willingness to be poured through something and come out lighter.

What you need to know
