Her story

Historical context

goddess · China from roughly the Tang dynasty to the present, across East Asia

Guanyin developed in China from the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara and became, distinctly, a woman — the one who hears. Sailors, the sick, the childless and the frightened have called her for centuries, and she is depicted with a thousand arms because listening alone was never considered sufficient.

Mythology & traditions

The vow that defines her is a refusal: standing at the threshold of nirvana, she turned back and said she would not go while anyone was still suffering. Her mercy is not soft-focus. She hears the cry, then does something about it — the willow branch sprinkles dew on the wound, and the thousand hands each hold a different tool.
