Her story

Historical context

goddess · India, c. 6th century CE onward; living tradition

Kali arose in Sanskrit texts as the terrible aspect of the Great Goddess, born from Durga's own fury in the fight with the demon Raktabija. In Bengal she is not feared but adored as Ma — Mother — the one you can say anything to.

Mythology & traditions

The famous image of her standing on Shiva is read by devotees as the moment her rage meets pure stillness and stops. Her skull garland is often counted as the letters of the alphabet: she wears language itself, the whole system of names, and can take it off.

Begin by cutting something. The new thing needs the old thing gone first.

What you need to grow

Nurture your ferocity. Love that cannot say no protects nobody.
