Her story

Historical context

spirit · Mbundu belief, living coastal tradition

Kianda is the Mbundu water spirit of the sea and lagoons around Luanda, honoured by fishers who offered gifts to bring good catches. She is often imagined as a mermaid-like woman.

Mythology & traditions

Stories place Kianda in rocks, lagoons and the open Atlantic, where abundance depends upon respectful exchange. The annual Festa da Kianda in Luanda publicly celebrates this relationship with the sea, although particular ritual knowledge belongs to its practitioners. Her many modern images show how an older water spirit continues to speak to an urban coastal community.
