Her story

Historical context

goddess · Baltic religion, preserved in Latvian dainas

Laima is the Latvian goddess of fate, featured in thousands of dainas (folk songs). She determines a person's lot at birth, attends weddings and is honored in the birthing sauna.

Mythology & traditions

Latvian dainas place Laima at birth, where she sets a child’s portion of fortune, and beside brides as they cross into married life. She walks hills and thresholds, sometimes alongside Dēkla and Kārta in later classifications of fate figures. Her decrees are firm, yet the songs also ask her blessing, keeping destiny in dialogue with human effort.
