Her story

Historical context

goddess · Estonian epic Kalevipoeg (1850s, from folk song)

Linda is the mother of the hero Kalevipoeg in the Estonian national epic compiled by Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald from older songs and published in the nineteenth century. She is an epic and folkloric mother rather than a securely attested goddess of worship. Her landscape stories connect her grief with prominent places around Tallinn.

Mythology & traditions

After her husband Kalev dies, Linda carries stones to build his burial mound; the stones become Toompea hill, the high ground at Tallinn’s center. Exhausted by mourning, she weeps until her tears form Lake Ülemiste. The myth turns private bereavement into enduring geography: sorrow becomes both memorial and homeland.
