Her story

Historical context

goddess · West and Central African coasts and rivers; documented from the colonial era, rooted earlier, thriving today

Mami Wata rises out of rivers and the Atlantic alike, gorgeous and dangerous, and she is famous for making bargains. She grants wealth, beauty and healing — and expects fidelity, cost and sometimes a life reorganised around her.

Mythology & traditions

She absorbed the modern world rather than resisting it: European prints, imported mirrors, sunglasses, banknotes. That is her real signature. She is the deity of the encounter — with strangers, with money, with the seductive new thing — and the reason her devotees keep her rules carefully is that her gifts are never free.
