The Morrígan

Great Queen, Phantom of the Battlefield

Early medieval Ireland; earlier Iron Age roots

✦

Her story

Historical context

goddess · Early medieval Ireland; earlier Iron Age roots

The Morrígan is Ireland's battle-goddess, often a trio, appearing as crow, eel, wolf and grey heifer. She incites armies, prophesies outcomes and decides who has the courage to hold ground.

Mythology & traditions

She meets Cú Chulainn and offers herself; he refuses her, and she fights him in animal forms for the rest of his life, washing his armour at the ford before his death. Her great prophecy after Mag Tuired describes peace and then, unflinchingly, the ruin that follows. She never lies to make you feel better.
