Her story

Historical context

goddess · Kikuyu origin tradition

In Kikuyu tradition, Ngai gave Gikuyu and Mumbi the land beneath Mount Kenya. Their nine daughters became mothers of the nine Kikuyu clans, named after them.

Mythology & traditions

At Mũkũrũ wa Nyagathanga, the ancestral home beneath Mount Kenya, Gikuyu and Mumbi raise daughters whose names anchor the major Kikuyu clans. In widely told versions, husbands are provided after sacrifice beneath a sacred mugumo fig. Mumbi’s role is ancestral and cultural rather than that of a universally worshipped goddess, and versions differ on the number and names of daughters.
