Her story

Historical context

spirit · Lokono tradition, recorded 19th century

Orehu appears in Lokono accounts from Guyana as a powerful female water being associated with healing knowledge and protection from harmful forces. Much of the written record comes through nineteenth-century collectors working under colonial conditions, while living Indigenous knowledge has its own custodians; this page therefore keeps to the broad, publicly recorded outline.

Mythology & traditions

Stories remember Orehu emerging from the water to teach remedies and protective knowledge to human beings. Her river is not simply scenery but a boundary between kinds of wisdom: healing is received through relationship with a more-than-human world, then carried back for the well-being of the community.
