Her story

Historical context

goddess · Andean South America, pre-Inca through the present; observed daily in Peru, Bolivia and beyond

Pachamama is the earth itself, and in the Andes she is not thanked afterwards — she is served first. Before anyone drinks, a little is poured on the ground. Every August households make offerings to her, and the whole relationship is governed by ayni: reciprocity, the obligation to give back what you take.

Mythology & traditions

She can and does withhold. Earthquakes, failed harvests and illness get read as an account falling out of balance, and the remedy is not apology but payment — a proper offering, buried or burned. Her worship survived four centuries of official Christianity by simply continuing at the same hours, and Bolivian miners still feed her at the mine mouth.
