Her story

Historical context

goddess · Greece, c. 7th century BCE onward

Taken while gathering flowers, Persephone becomes queen of the dead and returns each spring. The Eleusinian Mysteries built Greece's most important initiation around her return, promising initiates a better fate after death.

Mythology & traditions

The pomegranate seeds bind her to the underworld — but she is no longer Kore, the girl, when she comes back. She rules there. Later myths show her granting and refusing petitions on her own authority. Her story is not only abduction; it is how a person acquires a second country.
