Her story

Historical context

goddess · Champa, central Vietnam, c. 8th century CE onward; her towers are still active shrines

Po Nagar taught the Cham to farm rice and weave cloth, and her temple towers still stand above Nha Trang. She survived the fall of her own kingdom by being adopted — Vietnamese worshippers know her as Thiên Y A Na and continue to bring her offerings in the same brick sanctuary.

Mythology & traditions

Her stories are about founding: she creates the land, sets the crops, establishes the crafts, and mothers a dynasty. What is remarkable is her afterlife — a goddess of a conquered people who kept her altar because she was too useful and too loved to be evicted. Continuity, for her, came through adaptation rather than resistance.

What you need to know
