Rán

Mistress of the Drowning Net

Old Norse skaldic poetry and Eddas

✦

Her story

Historical context

goddess · Old Norse skaldic poetry and Eddas

Rán is the Norse sea goddess who gathers drowned sailors in her net. With Ægir she had nine daughters who were the waves; sailors carried gold to be welcome in her hall.

Mythology & traditions

Old Norse poems call the sea ‘Rán’s road’ and drowning ‘going to Rán.’ Her net gathers those lost offshore, while her nine daughters with Ægir personify waves with different names and tempers. The custom of carrying gold at sea reflects a grim hospitality: if the ocean takes a sailor, the guest should not arrive empty-handed.
