Her story

Historical context

goddess · Medieval Wales, Mabinogi manuscripts; earlier oral roots

Rhiannon rides out of the Otherworld on a white horse that no one can catch at a gallop, though she is only walking — until Pwyll simply asks her to stop, and she does. She chooses her own husband against arranged plans and speaks plainly throughout.

Mythology & traditions

When her infant son vanishes, her women lie to save themselves and she is condemned to sit at the gate telling every visitor her crime and carrying them on her back like a horse. She serves the punishment for years without breaking, and the child is returned. Her birds are said to wake the dead and lull the living to sleep.
