Wild Maiden of the Mountains

Her story

Historical context

spirit · Bulgarian folk song and legend

Samodivi are wild female spirits of Bulgarian folklore who dance in moonlit clearings, guard springs, and know the healing herbs of the mountains.

Mythology & traditions

Songs describe samodivi gathering at springs, riding wild horses and dancing in circles whose grass will not grow afterward. A human may bind one by stealing her veil or winged garment, but the union lasts only while her freedom is concealed. Their beauty and healing knowledge are inseparable from danger and from the mountain’s refusal to be domesticated.
