Her story

Historical context

goddess · Rigvedic India onward, c. 1500 BCE; living tradition

Saraswati began as a river goddess in the Rigveda and became the goddess of everything that flows — speech, melody, learning, invention. On Vasant Panchami children are taught their first letters in her name, and musicians and students lay their instruments and books at her feet.

Mythology & traditions

Her swan is said to separate milk from water, the image of discernment: intelligence is not accumulation but the ability to tell one thing from another. She holds a manuscript in one hand and plays with two others — she is study and performance at once, and she rides the current rather than damming it.
