Her story

Historical context

goddess · Inuit tradition across the Arctic; living tradition

Sedna lives at the bottom of the sea and the animals people hunt come from her. Her story is harsh: thrown from a boat, her fingers cut as she clung to the gunwale, each joint becoming seals, walrus and whales.

Mythology & traditions

Without hands she cannot comb her own hair, and when people break the rules of the hunt her hair tangles with their offences and she withholds the animals. The angakkuq travels down to comb it out. Her whole theology is that harm has to be untangled by someone, patiently, by hand.
