Her story

Historical context

goddess · Egypt, Old Kingdom through Ptolemaic period

Sekhmet is the lioness who goes out ahead of the pharaoh and burns his enemies. The same goddess who sends plague also lifts it, so her priests were physicians — you petition the one holding the knife.

Mythology & traditions

Sent by Ra to punish humanity, she could not be called back; the gods flooded the fields with beer dyed red, she drank it believing it blood, slept, and woke as gentle Hathor. Her festivals kept that memory: rage is real, and it is stopped by satisfaction, not by scolding.
