Her story

Historical context

goddess · Nordic Bronze Age sun cult through the Viking Age

Sól drives the sun across the sky in a chariot pulled by the horses Árvakr and Alsviðr, pursued every single day by the wolf Sköll, who will catch her at Ragnarök. Swedish rock carvings and the bronze sun chariot show this journey being honoured a thousand years before the Eddas wrote it down.

Mythology & traditions

Her defining quality is that she keeps going while being chased. In the far north the sun is not a given — it withdraws almost entirely and returns by effort. The Eddas add one mercy: after the wolf catches her, her daughter takes the reins and drives the new sun over the new world.
