Wanjiru

Maiden Who Brought the Rain

Kikuyu legend

✦

Her story

Historical context

spirit · Kikuyu legend

In a Kikuyu legend, drought ended only when the maiden Wanjiru sank into the earth; the rains came, and a young warrior followed her down and brought her back.

Mythology & traditions

The tale binds communal survival to a troubling demand for sacrifice: as Wanjiru sinks, rain begins to fall and the people celebrate. A warrior who loves her refuses to accept that exchange, follows her into the earth and restores her to life. Different tellings emphasize drought, social obligation or rescue, but her return complicates the idea that one vulnerable person must be lost for everyone else.
