The Sun Woman with the Torch

Her story

Historical context

goddess · Tiwi Islands, northern Australia; living oral tradition

Wuriupranili carries a burning bark torch across the sky from east to west each day. At the ends of her journey she paints herself with red and yellow ochre, and the powder brushed from her hands is what colours sunrise and sunset. Then she carries the torch back underground through the night.

Mythology & traditions

The extraordinary detail is the return trip. Her day does not end at dusk — she walks all night in the dark to be in position by morning. The beauty everyone admires is the by-product of an unbroken shift that no one sees half of.
