Her story

Historical context

goddess · China, from Shang-era oracle references and Han tomb art through Daoist tradition to today

In the oldest sources Xi Wangmu is a fierce mountain power with tiger's teeth who governs plague and punishment. Over the centuries she becomes the jade-crowned Queen Mother whose orchard grows peaches that ripen once every three thousand years and confer immortality on whoever is invited to eat.

Mythology & traditions

Emperors travelled to her gate and were usually found wanting. Her banquet is by invitation, her peaches cannot be stolen without consequence, and her transformation from tiger-toothed plague-bringer to serene queen is the point: the same power gives and withholds. She is the keeper of the threshold, and she decides who is ready to cross.

Ask to be let in. Apply, request the meeting, put your name forward.

What you need to grow

Nurture your long project. What you are growing ripens on its own schedule, not yours.

Crone

What you need to know

You cannot force the gate. Readiness is judged by someone whose criteria are not yours to set.
