Her story

Historical context

goddess · Popol Vuh (K'iche')

Xmucane is the divine grandmother and daykeeper of the K’iche’ Maya Popol Vuh, a work preserved in a sixteenth-century alphabetic manuscript from much older oral traditions. She participates in divination with maize kernels, raises the Hero Twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque, and later grinds yellow and white maize to prepare the substance from which successful human beings are formed.

Mythology & traditions

Her story spans generations of trial. She doubts Xquic at first, then accepts her after the young woman miraculously gathers maize; she cares for the Hero Twins while they confront the lords of Xibalba. At creation, water mixed with the meal she grinds becomes human flesh, making grandmotherly labor, divination and staple food central to humanity’s origin.
