Her story

Historical context

goddess · Aboriginal Australia; among the oldest continuous story traditions on earth

Yhi slept in darkness until a whistle woke her. She opened her eyes and light poured over the flat grey world; where she walked, grass and flowers came up out of the ground, and the sleeping spirits stirred and became creatures.

Mythology & traditions

Her creating is done by walking. Nothing in her story is made from a distance or by decree — she covers the ground, and life follows her feet. When she finished she rose into the sky and kept the habit: every dawn is Yhi doing the round again, and every morning the world has to agree to wake up.
