Mountain Mother of the Salt Flat

Local Aymara legend around the Salar de Uyuni tells of Tunupa, a mountain imagined as a woman whose tears and breast milk, shed for her lost child, spread across the plain and became the vast salt flat. Versions vary between communities.

Mama Qucha

Mother of Lakes and the Sea

Mama Qucha (Mama Cocha) was honored across the Andes as the mother of seas and lakes, including Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian–Peruvian border. Chroniclers recorded offerings to her for calm waters and good fishing.
