Abeguwo

Rain-Bringer of the Highlands

Ethnographic accounts of the Kai people of Papua New Guinea’s Huon Peninsula describe Abeguwo as a female rain power whose presence brought the water that sustained forest gardens. The surviving record available outside the community is brief, and names and versions can differ between tellings, so she is presented here without claiming a single fixed tradition.

Goga

Old Woman Who Kept Fire

In Melanesian storytelling, Goga is an old woman who alone held fire, keeping it within her body until a young man stole it; she answered with rain. The tale explains the origins of fire and storms.
