Her story

Historical context

spirit · Malagasy oral tradition

Rafara is a Malagasy tale-figure: a water maiden captured by a young man who seized her by her long hair while she rested on the shore. She stayed with him for a time, then returned to her deep-water home when her conditions were broken.

Mythology & traditions

Rafara belongs to a broad family of Malagasy water-woman stories in which a being from lake or river enters human marriage under conditions that are eventually violated. Her return to the water restores her agency and origin. Tellings vary considerably, so this page keeps the central boundary-crossing motif without claiming a single national canon.
