Water Princess of the Sacred Spring

Ranoro is a water-born woman of Merina legend who married a mortal prince on one condition: that he never speak the word 'salt'. When he broke the promise she returned to the water. Her spring is still visited with respect.

Daughter of the Deep Water

Rafara is a Malagasy tale-figure: a water maiden captured by a young man who seized her by her long hair while she rested on the shore. She stayed with him for a time, then returned to her deep-water home when her conditions were broken.
