Her story

Historical context

spirit · Yucatec Maya folklore

Xtabay is a spirit of Yucatec Maya folklore across Belize and Yucatán, a beautiful woman beneath the ceiba who lures careless travellers. The legend teaches discernment.

Mythology & traditions

One widespread moralized version contrasts the generous Xkeban with the outwardly respectable Utz-Colel: fragrant flowers grow from Xkeban’s grave, while Utz-Colel returns as a deceptive apparition. Later tellings merge this cycle with the dangerous woman beneath the ceiba. Because the legend changed under colonial moral codes, Xtabay cannot be reduced to a simple monster.
